What Type of Online Student Are You?
Online learning offers flexibility, and thinking about your goals now can help you
be successful with less stress. Choose the student type below that matches your goals
to begin planning your STLCC Online coursework.
Online Program Students
Online program students are STLCC students who are pursuing a 100% online program.
They take all of their courses online.
Casual Online Students
Casual online students are pursing a traditional, face-to-face degree at STLCC, and
will be taking only some of their courses online.

Is Online Learning Right for Me?
While online learning can be a convenient way to take the classes you need, it requires
time and discipline. Online course outcomes are identical to that of a face-to-face
class on the same topic, but the course content is not. The workload can be more demanding
than a regular face-to-face class in that you have to be a self-directed learner,
stay motivated, and stay on top of your workload independently. We are here to support
you through every step of the process.
All students pursuing online programs must meet the following requirements:
- High school diploma or GED/HiSet
- Complete the English, reading and mathematics assessment
- Be ready to take college-level English (ENG 101) and Intermediate Algebra (MTH 140)
- Have all developmental coursework completed
- Complete the Online Student Readiness Assessment
A Notice for Out-of-State Students
As a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), St. Louis Community
College has reciprocal agreements with most states to allow students living in those
states to take courses online. Residents of California should not apply for an online
program at St. Louis Community College.

Assessment and Course Placement
STLCC has a few options to determine your readiness for college-level coursework, contact one of the STLCC Assessment Centers for more information about student assessment and course placement.
Placement Testing at a Distance
Online students or students who cannot travel to one of the STLCC Assessment Centers
have two placement testing options: remote site testing (in-person testing at an approved
Accuplacer location near you) or virtual online proctoring, which allows you to take a placement test just about anywhere – even at home. Contact one of the STLCC Assessment Centers to assist you in setting up your test.
Online learning can be a convenient way to take the classes you need, but it requires
time and discipline. Before you apply, we recommend taking our Online Learner assessment
to learn more about yourself, online learning, and how to succeed. It takes about
30 minutes to finish, but you may log out and complete it later if necessary. Your
score will not prevent you from registering for online classes.
After the assessment, you will receive a score report which will help you understand
your strengths and opportunities for improvement, provide resources to help you succeed,
and provide help related to each area covered in the assessment.
To take the assessment, visit stlcc.smartermeasure.com.
Log into the assessment using
Username: online
Password: learner
After you login, you will receive an email from SmarterMeasure with a PIN number that
will allow you to log back in later or view your results again. If you have any questions
or would like to discuss your results, contact the Office of Online Student Services.
To successfully participate in online courses, you will need access to a computer
with reliable internet access.
You may also need programs from Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus, which is available to
all currently registered credit students at no additional cost.
For IT help please contact our IT HelpDesk.
If you have any questions about becoming an online learner, please see our FAQ or contact us.

New in Blackboard for Summer 2019!
A new tool, Ally, is available in Blackboard starting June 2019. The Ally tool provides
format options of files that your instructor uploads to your course. You can open
the alternative format menu to choose a file format the meets your needs.
Do you read on your phone or tablet, use a screen reader, like to annotate and highlight,
or listen to an audio version?
Ally automatically generates “alternative formats” from your original course files,
and makes them available for download so that you can engage with course content in
a way that works best for you.
