On this day, three days after her 12th birthday, Holocaust survivor Ruth Labovitch left her hiding place and celebrated her freedom.
“‘Come out, come out, the war is over!’”
World War II ended in Europe when Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.
“Victory in Europe Day” (or “VE Day”) is celebrated on May 8 in the United States and United Kingdom.
