ACRL Contemplative Pedagogy IG: Contemplative Inquiry as a Service Design and Training Technique

Have you ever considered how including contemplative inquiry in a training program could have powerful results? Laurel Whisler facilitated a training program for undergraduate peer mentors in a new service area, using contemplative techniques instead of a directive instructional approach. The technique involved asking the peer mentors to imagine the service from the perspective of people representing different roles as a way of understanding their responsibilities and activities in their support role. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the context, explain how contemplative inquiry played a significant role in the peer mentors’ training, and suggest ways the approach has relevance for libraries that may be training students or envisioning a new service with staff.
