Hace unos años me

Y me soltó “He intentado razonar,

Y
tú eres adulto. Tienes herramientas, tienes opciones, conoces la ley o incluso
puedes irte.

usarla?

¿Nadie?
Mi hermana me molesta. Mi hermana me mira. Mi hermana está respirando
el mismo aire que yo respiro.

Vamos

No
cometemos errores.

How to be the best influencer

Years ago I decided to become an influencer. I
know, you are tired of hearing about influencers, influencers here, influencers
there. Our task is extremely important, but our society undervalues us
constantly. However, to our followers we are the best.

So, I decided to take the Master’s Degree to
become an influencer, so after three terms of hard work and a very long exam, I
finally got my Influencer’s Degree along with my baby, my first follower.

Yes, my baby.

Those of you who already are influencers,
mothers or fathers, do you remember that moment? That instant when you became
an influencer?

Let’s travel together to the past.

Your first baby in your arms for the first
time, a happy first time, maybe you’ll remember the light weight, maybe the
smell, maybe a look, maybe happiness, maybe fear and responsibility. Responsibility
to teach them the important things in life. Responsibility for not making
mistakes.

Mistakes.

What do we do when children make mistakes? We punish
them, shout at them, threaten them… Does that really result in the learning
we intend? Are all behaviors that initially seem disruptive to children really mistakes
or is there some information missing instead, either for them or for us?

A few years ago, I discovered the answer to
this. Once I was preparing to go out and suddenly, I heard some screams on my
doorstep. When I arrived, I saw my three-year-old daughter dragging our baby
girl. I asked ‘What are you doing?’ And she said ‘I tried to reason with her,
but it did not work’.

At that moment I started to become a volcano
but… my neighbor opened her door. I smiled and then I calmly asked her what had
happened. Do you know what had happened?

The one-year-old baby had crawled into the
elevator and her sister was trying to get her out, she knew it was dangerous,
she wanted to protect her, she did what she could with the tools she had at her
tender age. I arrived in the 97th minute of the movie, and where I saw an
aggression, in my blindness, there was a rescue scene, where I saw a fight
there was only unconditional love -she was saving his sister.

Can you imagine having grown up like this? With
adults who try to understand your needs and decisions instead of reacting and
punishing you?

Can you imagine having empathy and compassion
and trying to understand that their behavior always responds to a need? That
is, act as we act with the rest of adults.

Imagine you invite some people over for dinner
at yours and someone drops and breaks a glass of wine all over our new white
carpet. What would you do? Would you scream ‘You are useless, I’ll never have
you here for dinner again, pick up this mess right now!”. No, what we’d do is
tell them not to worry, it was an old and unworthy glass, it does not matter, I’ll
pick it up, please do not get up, the important thing is that you have not hurt
yourself…

Maximum empathy and maximum compassion.

Well of course there are exceptions, situations
in which the protection instinct prevails over empathy and compassion. If we saw
a couple arguing at dinner, where she starts crying and he screams and
threatens to hit her, what would we do? Intervene or even call the police? And
what if I tell you that he is 35 years old and she is five? What would people
do? Surely nothing, they would think that the father is teaching his daughter,
is anything worth learning?

We are going to remember a time when you need
to learn quickly and a lot -your first day at your first job.

You arrive and try to start a conversation and
your new workmates say: ‘Listen, only veterans get to talk here, you are a newbie,
so keep quiet or, even better, go over there with the other newbies. Maybe you
can bring us some coffee?’. Then they say ‘You have to share your computer with
Jiménez, I don’t mind your parents bought it for you, in this company, we
share, I’ll count three. 1, 2, 3… Ok, this month you’re suspended with no pay
for punishment, do not make that face, we’re doing it for your own good, you
need to learn’. ‘You didn’t finish your meal, you’re so ungrateful, you know
there are people in the world who starve to death, you will eat it for
breakfast tomorrow instead of coffee and toast’.

Nonsense, isn’t it?

What you need when you arrive at a new job is to
feel comfortable, secure, feel that you are part of that new company and that
your opinion is being considered, right? When children arrive to this world,
they need exactly the same. And yet, we are punishing children when they are
learning to live life, we are penalizing them for their mistakes when they are
going to be what we teach them, we are penalizing them for living their
emotions, when their emotions will be what they want. It will allow you to be
happy.

Why?

Because we want to teach them. But to teach you
do not need to humiliate, to teach you need to be an example.

Imagine again that first day at work. You are
sitting at your table and your new boss comes in -two meters tall, and a
hundred kilos of pure muscle- and starts shouting at you to explain an error
you made in a report. What are you learning? Surely nothing, because when there
is fear, learning does not occur.

And you are an adult. You have tools, you have
options, you know the law or you can even leave. You can resign.

Kids can´t. They can’t resign.

We all deserve to be respected, for boys and
girls it is also essential, because their brain is still immature, and, also
because their survival depends on their connection with the adult they are
related to, as we are still very similar to the first Homo Sapiens.

Of course we no longer live in the Paleolithic.
And of course, everyone is calm in traffic jams, painting mandalas and
meditating, nobody looks like a Neanderthal shouting. Some of you will say things
have always been done this way and that didn’t come out that bad after all, but
we also used to wash our clothes in the river and now we use a washing machine instead
and now we are much better.

And it’s not about the past, it’s neither about
you, nor about me, it’s about them and only about them, it’s about our
responsibility to do our best NOW.

Many of us have this very clear, but sometimes,
boom! Sometimes we forget the theory and say those phrases that we promised not
to repeat ‘If I have to go …. You’ll have to face the consequences … if you
don’t pick up your toys, I’ll put them in the trash…’. That’s the way it is.
When we feel stressed, our brain enters into the primitive mode, the amygdala,
which is a part of the brain, takes control, hijacks the rational brain and our
emotions are exposed without any kind of filter. We react from fear to what
seems to be endangering our survival. Do you remember the elevator day? In that
example we do not see two sisters learning to grow up, no, we see a predator,
the predator previously known as an older three-year-old sister, who is
dragging our baby on the ground.

From that day on, I learned to use my magic
wand. Do you want me to teach you how to use it? I need you to follow my
instructions. Please, look at me and do exactly as I say. To learn how to use
our magic wand, we have to cross our arms (while
I raise them
). All arms crossed, please. Everyone, please. What happened?
What is more important? What I say or what I do? What I do, right?

We are all influencers. All of us. We are all
modeling others in a way of being and in a way being in the world. If we change
the perspective, if we think that, instead of challenges for our comfort, these
situations are opportunities to be a true example of the abilities that we
would like them to learn, everything changes. If I want my son to be
respectful, what is more efficient? Yelling at him ‘Be respectful or I will
have to punish you!’? Or being respectful to him and all those around us?
Yelling ‘Calm down!’ while shaking him? Yelling while asking him to be quiet?

For example, we give lectures about emotional
intelligence and assertiveness at home every day. How many of you give these lectures
to your children at 8 o’clock in the evening? There are people who prefer
morning time… Nobody? Don’t you have it scheduled? Don’t worry because we are here
to learn and your children will ask you, of course they won’t say ‘Dear mother,
it’s time for the nice lecture we had scheduled in our agenda”, nooo, they
will do it in a different way.

‘I don’t want to bathe’; with its subsequent ‘I
do not want to leave the bathtub’. ‘I do not want to pick up my toys’. ‘I want
to have pizza every day’. ‘My sister is bothering me’. ‘My sister is looking at
me’. ‘My sister is breathing the same air that I breathe’.

Take a deep breath.

It is so easy to go into primitive mode on the
Golden hours, right? Think about that time you were not the best version of
yourself, maybe the broccoli goes flying, you step on the Legos, a flooded
bathroom, or that hijack at the supermarket, yes, a hijack, an Amygdala hijack.
Oh sorry, Amygdala hijack, is what we use for adults, tantrum is the word we
disparagingly use for kids. So, that tantrum in the supermarket.

Now, imagine these situations in twenty years…
They won’t be important, right? What will be important is how the people we
love most felt, how we treated them, how we made them feel, and whether the
unconditional love we felt for them reach them or not.

In the middle of a tantrum, my mom and dad think
‘I love you and I’m with you for whatever you need, even if you’re screaming at
me’ or ‘You’d better behave, I only love you when you behave the way I like’.

What I do is more important than what I say, how
I make them is even more important. The purpose is not being perfect, it’s
about making sure the love, the unconditional love that all parents feel for their
children, gets to them.

It is not always possible for us to treat
everyone with 100% respect, we all make mistakes. We will not be able to treat
our children and loved ones perfectly all the time, it is our responsibility to
respond to their attachment and connection needs as long as possible.

The important thing is not the mistake, the
important thing is what we do with those mistakes, how we repair them and how
we learn from them. This requires a lot of effort, it will take us all of our
lives, it’s valuable and necessary, it is probably the purpose, the most
important task we have to carry out as social individuals, to treat others in
the same way that we would like them to treat us. Simply be that person you
needed when you were a little child, that person who treat others with the
utmost dignity and the utmost respect. We can be that person today. Today we
can be that person with the most important human beings in our life: ourselves.

There was a time when I did not really believe in
this, I was trying so hard to be the PERFECT mother that I wanted to be, that I
was forgetting about the person I was, I was so CONCERNED about my daughters
that I wanted them to be that I was not able to SEE the people they already were.

Children do not need perfect adults, they need
honest adults, aware that each and every day we have two options: we can relate
to childhood focusing on their defects or on their virtues, all influencers
have a magnifying glass and we can use it to focus on your weaknesses or to
focus on your strengths.

Every time you breathe instead of screaming,
you are giving your loved ones a chance to feel loved unconditionally. Every
time you listen to them instead of giving them orders, you are teaching them
that if they meet younger people it is fair to cooperate instead of imposing
their decisions. Every time you encourage them, you are signaling them the way
to happiness, which goes in the opposite direction from the path of fear, shame
and guilt.

Every time YOU, instead of blaming yourself,
take conscience and look for solutions, you are also modelling that every
mistake it is an opportunity to improve and build on our strengths. Being an
influencer starts with you, how do you treat yourself when you make a mistake?
It probably will have a lot to do with the way you were treated in your
childhood when you made a mistake.

You can change everything; from your small plot
of power you can change the world. Every day you have the opportunity to be an
influencer, every day you have the opportunity to influence the people you love
to be built from love or from fear.

We are going to make a last travel in time. Let’s
go back to the past, you remember your first follower, a newborn in your
arms… If I could give her or him a gift, as in fairy tales, what would it be?
Authentic, brave, empathetic, happy… And now with all those mixed sensations,
let’s travel to the future, thirty years have passed, you are at home, when
suddenly, there is a knock on the door, you open the door to find your
children, now grown-ups. What do you see in them from you? Their hair, their
ears, their nose… What influence do you see in them?

That adult who looks at you at the door is
being built today, the future is today, your actions have impact, your example
is marking them right now, so I ask you, are you going to choose to help them
build themselves from love or from fear? What kind of influence are you going
to choose?
