Dream Big, Work Hard, Stay the (Bumpy) Course

For those of you who don’t know Lilly Singh, she is a very successful “YouTuber” that was just announced as the new host of an NBC late night talk show and is Canadian! Here is the first line of her Wikipedia page:

Lilly Singh (born September 26, 1988) is a Canadian YouTuber, comedian, television host, and actress widely known as IISuperwomanII.

Admittedly, I know very little about Lilly Singh and do not watch late night TV (probably because it is so late).  But jumping through a Twitter rabbit hole, I ended up on this awesome tweet:

Her original”dream” tweet is from 2011 while her “reality” tweet is from March 2019.  What an awesome tweet that brought me to tears.

Some things about this tweet:

  1. Mainstream media is starting to understand the value of online personalities.  You are going to to see more “YouTube” personalities get their shows, while more “traditional” celebrities are going to YouTube (see Jack Black’s awesome channel, “Jablinski Games”).
  2. It shows that dreaming big is important, but I love that there are eight years between the “dream” tweet until now. It shows that hard work can pay off if you are patient and consistent with what you do.
  3. The first time I heard about Lilly Singh was when I heard she had to take a break because of burnout from her work.

“I am mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted,” she admitted. “I could be mentally healthier. There’s a lot that I need to address, and I’m not able to [when I am] constantly pumping out content.”

A reminder that trajectories toward success do have not only ups but also downs and that is part of what makes us human. It is also a reminder that others we see as “successful” deal with mental health issues whether we can see them or not.

  4. This tweet reminded me of Matthew McConaughey’s Oscar Speech talking about how his “hero” was himself in 10 years and how it is important to not always look forward but to look back and appreciate how far we have come. We all grow, but sometimes we need to breathe, step back, and take a look at our journey.

It is just a cool story that I wanted to share with you all.
