We have developed three elearning courses to help frontline workers who do not work in welfare rights get to grips with important changes in the benefits system. These three courses are currently free:

• Scottish Welfare Fund
• Surviving the Appeals Process
• Universal Credit

Advantages of elearning

Elearning has many advantages. It is a flexible and cost effective way to learn, avoiding the expense of travel and extra time away from work.

There are other benefits that might not be so obvious:

• You learn at your own pace
• You can undertake elearning at whatever time suits you
• You can work from any location with internet access

Elearning courses

Scottish Welfare Fund

The Scottish Welfare Fund is an important source of financial support for people in the greatest need. It can provide a safety net in an emergency and can help people to leave care and live independently or to continue living independently.

This course is designed to help you find out how you can support people to get the help they need from the fund.

Through case studies, interactive quizzes and activities you will look at how the Scottish Welfare Fund works:

• What is the Scottish Welfare Fund
• Who can get help from the fund
• How to apply
• What to do if you are turned down

Surviving the Appeals Process

Winning an appeal can help people maintain a basic income or meet the costs of their disability. It is great if you can find an experienced adviser to help. But the chances of winning are good even if you are going it alone, or you are new to advice work or to appeals.

This course is designed to help you to make your own way, or support people, through the appeals process. Through case studies, interactive quizzes and activities you will look at how the system for challenging decisions works:

• How do you identify the decision?
• What is ‘mandatory reconsideration’?
• How to appeal
• What happens after you appeal

Universal Credit

Universal credit is a complete change to the system of financial support for people of working age. This course is designed to help you get to grips with new and important issues in the benefits system.

Through interactive quizzes and activities you will look at how universal credit works:

• Who can get universal credit
• Amounts of universal credit
• Claiming universal credit
• Your claimant commitment
• Sanctions
• Moving to universal credit

Our courses take on average one hour to complete. Once you have completed the course and submitted your evaluation, you can then print off your certificate.

UNCRC training

This ten minute training tool from the Scottish Government provides an understanding of children’s rights, rights frameworks ( e.g. UNCRC) and rights-based legislation. Download it free here.
