Everyone is eager to find out who will be elected President: the incumbent, Republican Donald Trump, or the challenger, Democrat Joe Biden.

To win the presidency, a candidate must get the majority of the electoral votes. They’re divvied up among the states based on population. Biden will likely win the solid blue states, and Trump the solid red states, whereas the battleground states are most likely to swing the election.

Normally, several hours after voting sites close, news outlets have enough information to project a winner. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year is different. Up to half of voters are mailing in their ballots. That may mean tallying the results could take days, or even weeks. An early lead on Election Night does not guarantee a win.

So, Americans will have to be patient as every vote gets counted. In the meantime, please vote!
