Different substances heat up at different rates due to their heat capacity and specific heat capacity. Heat capacity refers to the energy needed to raise a substance’s temperature, while specific heat capacity measures the energy required to heat 1 gram of a substance by 1°C. Water, with its high specific heat, heats and cools more slowly than metals.
