Brain scans show that we spend 50% of our time remembering the past and imagining the future. When we do this, the Default Mode Network is active.

The problem with this is negativity bias. This is the strong human tendency to focus on the negative (regretting the past and worrying about the future). This increases stress.

Studies also show that our past memories, including those that shape who we are, are "uniformly poor". In fact, the accuracy of 50% of our memories is no better than chance.

This is because our thinking mind is being shaped by new events; it also means we spend a huge percentage of our time punishing ourselves for things that are not even true.

It is not surprising then that our thinking causes the amygdala to fire excessively, causing worry, anxiety and fears that can develop into depression, phobias, addictions, insomnia and physical pain in the body.

In a hypnosis session with me, we clear out the emotional stress that has accumulated over the years, leaving people feeling light, worry free, and able to enjoy living in the present.

However, over time our thinking will cause the emotional baggage to collect and store again. This is where meditation comes in.

When someone stays focused on the present moment (meditates), the Default Mode Network shuts down, and we no longer ruminate on negative, stressful thoughts.

This reduces the anxiety, depression and the fears that we have, and stops us collecting and storing new stress, leaving us calm, relaxed and at peace.

Staying focused on the present also slows down our brain waves, giving us access to our subconscious hard drive – our inner knowing.

Meditation opens the door to the amazing world of self-hypnosis. Through meditation, we can communicate with, learn from and even make changes to our inner world.
