NCES/IPEDS Academic Library Component Survey: A Discussion of Future Sustainability

In this session we discuss the considerations for a sustainable future for the Academic Library Component survey currently under the National Center for Education Statistics – Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (NCES/IPEDS) aegis. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has commissioned QualityMetrics to perform a sustainability study for a future transfer of the AL Component from IPEDS/NCES to IMLS. Academic library statistics have been collected by the federal government at NCES under the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) data collection in the 1970s-80s, the Library Statistics Program in the 1990s, and IPEDS after 2014. Recurring concerns about the burden of the IPEDS data collection on institutional research units raised questions as to whether the AL Component survey can continue under NCES/IPEDS. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is keenly interested in the future of libraries of all types including academic libraries. IMLS is studying what a sustainable future for the AL Component looks like. This discussion forum will update the community on the issues discussed as the study is underway. The study will be completed in the Fall of 2021.
