Happy Hanukkah!

December 21 is the fourth night of Hanukkah in 2022.

As a girl in Budapest, Olga Menczer always looked forward to the fourth night of Hanukkah—when it was finally her turn to light the family menorah. Olga recorded her story of survival with USC Shoah Foundation in 1998 and continued to educate her community in New Jersey for many years. We join Olga in wishing all who are sharing in the light a happy fourth candle!

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of Judea from Assyrian Greek occupation and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after its defilement. The Talmud records that a miracle occurred during this rededication: the menorah (candelabra) of the Temple was lit with enough sanctified oil to last one day, but remained lit for eight days. This event is commemorated by lighting candles of a Hannukiah (Hannukah candelabra) for eight days.
