Proud in my heart - Bulman School | The Song Room

The Song Room returned to Bulman School in Gulin Gulin Country in the last week of June 2022, courtesy of The Smith Family, Katherine.

Our Facilitators Steve and Cate (www.realtone.com.au) worked with the senior students to write and record the song ‘Proud In My Heart’ and produce a video clip.

Special thanks must go to local guitarist Nathanial for playing the guitar and singing in the verses, and also to Deanthia for teaching us the Rembarrnga words in the song.

Thanks to Irene and the staff and students of Bulman School for hosting us during a very busy time of the year. Thanks especially to the senior class for being a part of the project and stepping out of their comfort zones to sing and play so beautifully.

PROUD IN MY HEART – Bulman School (Gulin Gulin) (19 – 24th June 2022)
verse 1
My Country
We walk on the land from a young age
My Country
Listen to the birds sing, makes us feel safe
My People
We sit by the fire, tell stories the old people taught
My People Ngarra jalji nga wanjginda ngarra jalji nurrah (We are together, we stay together)
Chorus
When they tell me stories, I be proud in my heart
Nahwulla, nahwulla (You good, you OK?)
Now I’ve go this knowledge, I can play my part.

verse 2
Night Fishing
Been going out for a long long time
Night Fishing
With spears, lures and fishing line
Night Fishing
Make a bonfire in the middle for light
Night Fishing Old people teaching young ones right

verse 3
We put a fence around Weemol Spring
To stop Nganaburru (Buffalo) from coming in
He dirty up the water
Stomp Dattam (water lilly) down
Now it’s clean ’cause he’s not around

Looking for mud muscles down at Bighetti
boil them up, then they ready
cook up a long neck (turtle) the livers the best
So much bush food, we really are blessed
