Renée Firestone was born on April 13, 1924, in Eastern Czechoslovakia. In 1944, Renée and her family were deported to Auschwitz, where she lost her mother and sister. Renée survived two concentration camps and a death march before being liberated in 1945. After immigrating to the United States in 1948, Renée settled in Los Angeles, California, where she became a successful fashion designer and Holocaust educator.
