Tina Strobos Chudson was born into a family of feminist role models who were involved in the labor movement and Women’s Peace Movement. During World War II, Tina and her mother rescued over one-hundred Jews by hiding them in their family’s boarding house in Amsterdam, and smuggling them to other regions.

“It was purely [for] human reasons. Life is sacred, and we have to help each other. That was the reason.”

On multiple occasions, Tina was arrested, interrogated, and beaten by the Gestapo, who suspected that she was aiding Jewish refugees. Regardless, Tina protected them, and used clever tactics – including sexuality – to pass these interrogations. Tina additionally joined and supported Dutch resistance movements by hiding weapons in her home, forging passports, and transporting radios and firearms. In 1989, Yad Vashem officially recognized Tina and her mother as “Righteous Among the Nations.”

March is Women’s History Month in the United States.
