World’s Leading Endurance Brand Rolls Out Five-Event Series with New Format
BOSTON, Mass. (December 30, 2020) – Spartan, the world’s leading endurance sports and wellness brand, has announced the return of its US National Series (USNS) Presented by USANA for the 2021 race season. The competitive five-event obstacle course racing (OCR) series will see some of the sport’s best female and male athletes vie for the title at some of the most challenging outdoor venues across the country. The 2021 Spartan US National Series Presented by USANA kicks off February 28 in Jacksonville, Fla. with a 5k, 20-obstacle Spartan Sprint® event hosted by Visit Jacksonville.
“We’re coming back stronger than ever in 2021,” said Spartan Founder and CEO Joe De Sena. “While the pandemic has sidelined Spartan’s elite athletes for nearly a year, they haven’t lost their competitive edge. Athletes have been hard at work, training, plotting their return and it’s almost here – which will lead to some of the best action we have ever seen on the Spartan OCR course.”
Following the Jacksonville event, Spartan’s USNS continues to San Luis Obispo, Calif. April 11 for a 10k, 25-obstacle Spartan Super® event hosted by Visit Slo Cal at a new Spartan venue with rolling hills and technical terrain – before returning to Big Bear Lake May 16 for an epic Spartan Super® event unfolding on unpredictable mountain terrain. Utah’s Mount Orden adds additional elevation with steep, technical descents to the series with the first 21k, 30-obstacle Spartan Beast® event of the series hosted by the Utah Sports Commission July 17. The USNS concludes August 28 with a Spartan Beast® event hosted by West Virginia Tourism in the hills of West Virginia at the Summit at Bechtel Reserve, the former site of the Spartan North American Championship.
Spartan USNS winners are decided by cumulative event points, with the best three out of five races counting towards the final leaderboard. Race and series prize money will be announced at a later date.
Following the series, athletes from the US, Canada and Mexico will compete in the Spartan North American Championship, to be announced – with all roads leading to the 2021 Spartan World Championship in Abu Dhabi, UAE, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which unfolds December 3-5 – where athletes from across the globe will face off.
In addition to the qualified elite field, competitive athletes will enter 10 women’s and men’s age group categories: 14 – 17, 18 – 24, 25 – 29, 30 – 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 – 54, 55 – 59, and 60+. Each Spartan USNS race weekend also features open heat events for athletes of all skill levels.
“We’re excited for the return of live Spartan events and prioritize the safety of everyone onsite at our events with the utmost importance,” said Spartan’s Vice President of Production Mike Morris. “As such, we’ll continuously monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, and modify our operating procedures as needed to create the safest possible environment at all of our events.”
With safety being Spartan’s No. 1 priority, the brand will implement modified operating procedures to maximize the safety of racers, spectators, and all event personnel.
