TCT 2021: Luis Ortega Paz, PCRonline Board member, interviews Rafael Romaguera, principal investigator of the SUGAR trrail. SUGAR is the first powered trial to compare new generation DES in patients with #diabetes, and also the first to include a broad population of patients with diabetes (all-comers design). It was financed by the Spanish Society of Cardiology.
There are an estimated 500 million diabetics worldwide, many of which suffer from coronary artery disease. In the US, 38% of all PCIs are carried out in diabetic patients. Diabetic patients are complex and the patient should be considered and followed up as a whole.
