Surviving Farhud in 1941 Baghdad | Steve Acre | USC Shoah Foundation

Steve Acre was only 9 years old when he experienced Farhud in Baghdad. "Farhud" refers to the pogrom (or massacre) of Iraqi Jews in Baghdad, Iraq, which occurred on June 1-2, 1941 (during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot).

What is a "pogrom"?
Oxford Languages defines "pogrom" as "an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jewish people in Russia or eastern Europe."

What is "Shavuot"?
Shavuot is a Jewish holiday that occurs each year in May or June (on the sixth & seventh day of the Hebrew month, Sivan). This holiday commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai, and celebrates the beginning of the summer wheat harvest.
