“The Turn” SESSION 1: Stagnant and divided

In this first session of "The Turn: From Reactionary Populism To A Progressive Alternative," Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Harvard Law School Professor and political philosopher Professor Roberto Mangabeira Unger seek to answer the question "What happened to socially inclusive economic growth and progressive politics?"

"The Turn" is a three-lecture course in which Professor Sachs and Professor Unger discuss the systemic and structural changes necessary to create a progressive future, with a focus on Brazil and the US. Both countries suffer from political polarization, populism, social conflict, and economic inequality among the highest in the world. Professors Sachs and Unger analyze and debate how the two countries reached their current state of crisis, and how each nation can forge a progressive alternative to overcome the current impasse.
