In the summer of 1944, Dawn (Auslander) Adams, her parents and her siblings were deported from a Hungarian Ghetto to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Dawn, then 22, and her sister were selected for a labor force. In this clip, she describes standing through a day-long roll call that took place on the Jewish fast day of Tisha B’Av, which commemorates the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.
Tisha B’Av (The Ninth of Av, occurring on August 6-7 in 2022) is a day of mourning and fasting. The holiday commemorates various tragedies that befell the Jewish people throughout history, particularly the destruction of the two temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE.
