Liver Cancer: When to Use Protons?

Where available, protons can be used effectively to treat tumours in the liver and biliary ducts. Dr. Ben-Josef will describe the rationale for proton therapy in liver cancer, how protons are used to treat liver cancers, outcomes, toxicities and special considerations regarding the use of protons for liver cancers. Discussion will include the pros and cons of proton therapy versus photon therapy and patient selection for proton therapy.
Speaker Bio:
Edgar Ben Josef is a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Vice-Chair for Translational Research, Department of Radiation Oncology, and Interim Director of Clinical Research, Department of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Ben Josef completed his B.Med.Sc and MD at the Hebrew-Hadassah University, in Israel and his residency training in radiation oncology at Wayne State University, Harper Hospital, Detroit, MI. Since 2007, Dr. Ben Josef has been a member of the Editorial Board, The Cancer Journal: The Journal of Principles and Practice of Oncology, and is a Founding Member and Editorial Board, Translation Oncology. His research interests include Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for Hepatocellular Carcinoma, and treatment of GI cancers using proton therapy.
