Newton’s first law states than an object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion with constant velocity, until acted on by an unbalanced force. The tendency of objects to maintain their state of motion is called inertia. On Earth, moving objects commonly come to rest without continued application of a force due to the unbalanced forces of friction and air resistance.
