Smoking stinks! And that’s just one downside of this unhealthy habit. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of harmful chemicals that wreak havoc on a user’s lungs. But the damage doesn’t stop there. Smoking also damages the heart, skin, eyes, liver—pretty much every major organ in one’s body. Over time, this damage can lead to cancer and even death.

So why would anyone ever touch cigarettes in the first place? Some people start smoking because they think it looks cool, or because they see friends or family members doing it. Whatever the reason, once someone starts, it’s extremely hard to quit. That’s because tobacco contains an addictive and harmful substance called nicotine. E-cigarettes also contain nicotine, so vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking regular cigarettes! Smokers rely on nicotine to feel good, and going without it leads to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

There are lots of resources to help smokers quit, from books to support groups to medicines that help manage cravings. So whether it’s you or someone you know who’s trying to quit, just remember: You’re not alone!
