December 20 is the third night of Hanukkah in 2022.
On the night of Sidney Bratt’s interview with USC Shoah Foundation, his family was celebrating Hanukkah. In this clip from his testimony, Sidney blesses the Hanukkah candles with his wife and grandchildren, using the Siddur (Jewish prayer book) that once belonged to his mother.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of Judea from Assyrian Greek occupation and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after its defilement. The Talmud records that a miracle occurred during this rededication: the menorah (candelabra) of the Temple was lit with enough sanctified oil to last one day, but remained lit for eight days. This event is commemorated by lighting candles of a Hannukiah (Hannukah candelabra) for eight days.
