On May 15, 1944, Hungarian officials (under instruction by the German SS) began deporting Hungarian Jews to German concentration camps. Between May 15-July 9, approximately 440,000 Jews were deported out of Hungary.

In his testimony, Holocaust survivor Michael Mason describes being deported by boxcar from Hungary to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp in German-occupied Poland.

Michael Mason was born in Czechoslovakia, and grew up in Hungary. He survived the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp, the Mühldorf concentration camp, and a death march. Michael was liberated in Germany by United States armed forces.
