On May 10, 1933, Nazi-supporting students publicly burned books deemed “un-German” (including books by Jewish authors and “anti-national” literature). Public bonfires were erected in 34 locations across Germany.
In her testimony, Holocaust survivor Esther Clifford recalls witnessing one of these bonfires, and her non-Jewish peers being encouraged to participate. She was 12 years old.
