Cancer can be really scary—especially if you don’t know much about it. The good news is, doctors have more tools than ever for detecting the disease early and treating it successfully.
Cancer is caused by a normal process in our bodies: cell division. Every cell contains DNA, genetic material that includes the instructions for building and maintaining our bodies. But occasionally, mistakes can occur in DNA. Most of these mutations are not a problem. But as mistakes build up over time, a cell might start dividing uncontrollably. This can lead to the formation of tumors, or lumps of abnormal cells. Some tumors are harmless, but others can interfere with vital body functions, such as breathing or digestion. It’s important to catch these harmful tumors early, before they have a chance to spread to other parts of the body.
