Holocaust Survivor Magda Bergstein | “We Were Like Half-Corpses” | USC Shoah Foundation

Magda Bergstein was born in Miskolc, Hungary in 1929. Magda survived the Miskolc ghetto, Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and Grünberg concentration camp. After enduring a death march out of Grünberg, Magda was liberated by British armed forces at Bergen-Belsen.

In 1945, World War II was nearing its end. Nazi Germany became threatened by incoming Allied Forces (armies including the United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union), and attempted to hide concentration camp prisoners by moving them, on foot, to other locations. These days-long forced marches became known as “death marches,” for any prisoner who stopped to rest was immediately murdered by Nazi guards. Additionally, these marches were intended to cause as many deaths as possible through exhaustion, starvation, and exposure to harsh natural elements (such as freezing weather).

In her testimony, Magda recalls enduring an approximately 250-mile death march from Grünberg to Bergen-Belsen in the harsh winter of 1945. Magda and fellow survivors were liberated by British troops in April of 1945.
