WWII ended when Japan surrendered in September of 1945. Sigmund Tobias and his family had fled Berlin in 1939, after his father was imprisoned in Dachau Concentration Camp following the Kristallnacht anti-Jewish violence. The family found relative safety in the Hongkew Ghetto, in an area of Shanghai occupied by Japan. They were living in the Hongkew Ghetto when news spread of Japan’s surrender. Sigmund, who became a renowned psychologist, recalls learning of the atrocities that had taken place in Europe. In his testimony, Sigmund reflects on developing “survivor’s guilt,” which he endured throughout the remainder of his life.
