Michigan State University will pay a $4.5 million fine to the U.S. Department of Education for its mishandling of sexual abuse of student athletes by former team physician Larry Nassar.

Nassar was convicted and jailed for sexually assaulting hundreds of women both at Michigan State and with the USA gymnastics team.

The university must completely rework the processes by which it adjudicates and investigates sexual violence cases and must also hire a law firm to review decisions made by Michigan State in sexual violence cases, according to a resolution agreement with the Education Department.

It must also investigate the actions of former Michigan officials as it relates to the Nassar case, including former university president Lou Anna Simon.
