The recent events across our country have been devastating. I am personally saddened and disappointed that there are those in our country that must face such deep injustices. The killing of George Floyd and those who have come before him is wholly unjust, painful, and intolerable. I wish to acknowledge the sorrow and desolation of our African American colleagues and condemn the racialized violence that persists and has brought us to this moment. 

I also understand the time for simply stating our solidarity has passed. As educators, we must commit to real, constructive action to end the injustice and ensure equity. 

Like many organizations, OLC has much work to do to advance our association and realize our aspirations. We commit to listen, learn, and practice as we continue to diversify and provide resources that support diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. We know we can create change by engaging with our community and by welcoming diverse voices and ideas to guide us. 

In addition to reaffirming our long-standing commitments to equity and providing impactful resources for all, OLC is strengthening our focus on the specific needs of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and establishing a comprehensive strategy for support of HBCUs. OLC will continue our work with leaders in the African American community to amplify our efforts in order to make the greatest contributions and progress.  I want our community to know that we are here, not simply to stand with you, but to help navigate the immense challenges this year has brought to education and our society. 

I welcome your ideas, input, and criticisms as OLC works to apply our influence to prevent future injustices and find our collective way forward.

Jennifer Mathes, Ph.D Chief Executive Officer, Online Learning Consortium Jennifer is responsible for the development of OLC’s long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies. She also provides leadership in researching and planning strategic initiatives, special projects and partnerships that align with OLC’s mission, vision and goals. Dr. Mathes has nearly 20 years of experience in both public and private higher education where she has served as a faculty member and an academic leader. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she wrote her dissertation on “Predictors for Student Success in Online Education.” She also has earned a Master of Science degree in Business Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications from Illinois State University. leadership@onlinelearning-c.org
