The Manchester College has come out on top at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon awards, for their use of technology to support students with special educational needs (SEND).

The Jisc-sponsored award for most effective use of technology, was given to the college in recognition of its work to create more than a hundred bespoke assistive technology solutions each year. These tailored digital innovations are not only accessible and flexible, they are also sustainable, durable, affordable, and portable.

The judges praised the college for the range of students it supports – including those with higher needs, students with learning difficulties such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and those with social and emotional, and mental health difficulties, along with the more ‘visible’ physical disabilities, such as visual or hearing Impairments.

The Manchester College identifies student need by working closely with transition officers, special educational needs coordinators, students and parents, to find out where SEND learners could benefit from digital support.

Robin Ghurbhurun, managing director of further education and skills at Jisc, said:

“This is a well-deserved accolade for the team at The Manchester College, which should be incredibly proud of its impressive use of technology to support SEND students. This work is important now more than ever, with the entire education sector turning to online learning and using technology to teach and train during the coronavirus climate.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate with The Manchester College, and would like to congratulate the college team for making such a difference to the learning experiences of SEND students.”

Julie Nerney, chair of AoC’s charitable trust, says:

“Colleges excelling digitally is hugely important as they reflect the fast-paced changes that are happening in the world of work.

“Colleges will need to use technology to contribute to the development of the curriculum – including equipping SEND students with digital skills. The Manchester College is ensuring it underpins the learning experience as well.”

Now in its 25th year, the AoC Beacon Awards showcase best practice and innovation in UK colleges. The awards also highlight excellence and helps share best practice across the sector.
