If you’re a non-native Spanish speaker and you teach heritage learners that know some vocabulary you haven’t been exposed to, don’t be afraid to let them teach you. I’m fluent in Spanish and I tested extremely high on my fluency test in graduate school. I’m near-native like in my Spanish abilities. However, sometimes native speakers know words that I don’t know. Students respect you SO much when you just admit that you don’t know something. There’s nothing to hide! That doesn’t mean you have nothing to teach them.
